The Elm City: New Haven is called home by approximately 124,000 (the Greater New Haven area is called home by about 600,000 people), and had the first tree planting program in America. This produced a canopy of mature trees (which included elm trees), thus giving New Haven the nickname, "The Elm City".
New Haven is also best known for being the location of Yale University. Yale is located in the heart of downtown, and is the city's largest employer. Yale is a member of the Ivy League, and is also the third-oldest institution of higher education in America. The University has a beautiful campus, and many of the buildings were built in the neo-Gothic architecture style -- which adds to the overall beauty of the city of New Haven.
